Six Word Story Inspiration

In 2010 designer Anne Ulku, and writer Van Horgen, created Six Word Story Every Day(SWSED), a daily storytelling exploration through language and typography. It was inspired by the work Ernest Hemingway regarded as his greatest: “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”

In 2011, Anne accepted and curated submissions from writers and designers all over the world who created their very own six word stories.

MICA Internship Fair this Friday!

image

There will be some organizations and businesses on campus this Friday at the Brown Center 1-4pm. If you’re looking for an internship (some are paid!) or job it could be useful in the Baltimore area. Here’s the website: http://micacareerfair.wordpress.com/

and specific companies looking for designers:
http://micacareerfair.wordpress.com/category/for-graphic-design/

On the company profiles it is indicated if they are have full-time, part-time or intern positions. A few of the companies seem like they could offer some good experience…

Homework due for Thur, Mar 29

We will meet in two sections, 4pm and 7pm. Please bring the following and note your group times below.

  1. Printouts of your two variations of your print ads
  • black and white, at full-size**. trimmed down.
  • PDF to project on screen if your printouts are black and white.
  • you may bring color printouts if you prefer

**Size is determined by the magazine you will be designing for. e.g. REAL SIMPLE is wider than businessweek so measure your magazine to determine your final page size.

To print out an ad that is larger than the letter-size 8.5 x 11, you can print a tiled version from the black and white laser printer and then trim and tape it together. Reference the post on “tiling” below.

Tiling a Poster for Crits

To Tile from Adobe InDesign 5.5

  1. Choose File > Print.

image

  1. In the Setup area of the Print dialog box, select Tile.

image

  1. Choose one of the following options in the Tile menu:Auto Automatically calculates the number of tiles required, including the overlap. Auto Justified Increases the amount of overlap (if necessary) so that the right sides of the rightmost tiles are aligned at the right edge of the document’s page, and the bottom sides of the bottommost tiles are aligned at the bottom edge of the document’s page.

I recommend printing with AUTO, and then hit print. Once it is done printing, trim and tape according to the marks on the margins of the page.

Extra Credit!

image

http://fyi.mica.edu/event/mfa_first_year_show_ii

For 10pts extra credit (that’s a whole letter grade!)

1. Visit the GD MFA First Year Show (II) in the gallery opposite the McDonalds on North Ave before it closes on March 11th!

2. Write a one page response to a one or a series of GD MFA projects you found particularly interesting. Alternatively, you may write a reaction to the show in its entirety.

3. This is not busy work, I truly want you to go, visit and reflect on the work. Your one page response needs to be thoughtfully processed and composed.

Did any of the projects bring up questions in your mind? What where those questions? Did you discover new processes or techniques? Did a visual stick in your mind…why?

This gallery is across from the McDonald’s on North Ave and sits next to the Baltimore Print Studios. The show ends on the 11th, so hurry!!
